at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. we are told that scene is secure at this point. the public is not in any danger but there are lots of families in that community who will be scarred forever. 26 dead. 18 children. eight adults. this is the second worst shooting -- second worst school history in the history of this country. amanda ross is our reporter with wvit on the ground there covering the story from the beginning. amanda, tell me about the fire station nearby and the role that it played in all of this. >> well, the fire station when we first got on the scene and more of like the triage station and where everything was set up and now told by the other reporters with us over there is that that is most likely where the families are stationed. we heard that the governor went in to the building and the fire station and hasn't come out yet. we think that's where he's meeting with the families, briefing them, he's telling them what's going on. he wouldn't even actually come out and talk to the media because he was so focused on getting the families that information f
school shooting in united states history second only to the massacre at virginia tech in newtown, connecticut, 50 miles southwest of connecticut state capital, and 60 miles from our studio in new york city. cops identified the shooter as 24-year-old man, ryan lanza. police say at 9:30 they received an emergency call from the school right after the school, or around the town the school usually looks the doors. the killer, dressed in mock military gear, armed with two guns as he opened fire inside the school. his victims? teachers and children. >> we spotted the troopers and the newtown police entered the school and me began a complete active shooter seven including checking every door and every crack and every portion of the school. our objective was to evacuate as quickly as possible. >> officials have not confirmed the number of dead saying that they are in the process of notifying families. the officials said the shooter died inside the school. it is unclear if he took his own life or if police killed him. there are reports that the man's mother was found dead and investigators
as well as you might imagine. this is newtown, connecticut, for folks who are not familiar. this town is roughly about 27,000, 28,000 folks who live there. i live roughly 15, 20 minutes away from newtown, connecticut. it's a very small town, and this is one of those stories that affects you in a very personal -- even if you don't have children, for instance, one of our directors who works here at msnbc, i just saw him before i came out here. he was rushing home. he has a daughter who goes to this school, thankfully, according to his wife, his daughter is okay. he has talked to a number of parents who have children in this school who have described in vivid detail what transpired there some hours ago. some of the stories we are going to hear play out here over the mechanics few hours, but according to him, according to the director, one of the things that happened inside that school based on conversations that he had with his wife, at one point when the shooting started there were a number of adults in that building, presumably 250e67ers, but a number of adults who managed somehow to b

the newtown area. lanza's mother was a teacher at this elementary school and most of the shootings occured in her classroom. she and some of her students were killed. also, a body was found in a home connected to lanza and the motive for these shootings is not known at this hour. i want to go now to john miller as we are still grappling with this terrible tragedy which i think melissa mackriss, a mother put it so well. this is a parents' worst nightmare. certainly parents of those school children who heard this news rushed to the school, many of them reunited with their children but some parents learned the very sad news that their children had been killed and have been with the governor of connecticut and others who are speaking with them. i know you've been speaking with your law enforcement sources. describe what's going on at this moment as they are trying to find more information about the shooter and how he was connected to this. >> they're doing background investigations into the shooter but also going to locations associated with the shooter. not just directly associated with ryan

in newtown, concould. police briefed the media giving the latest information, and here's what we know so far. 26 total victims, 20 of them young children. civics them were adults in the shooting that happened around 9:30 this morning. investigators say that a gunman came to the sandy hook elementary school here in newtown. he entered. he went to a classroom that nbc news has learned was taught by his mother. she was a kindergarten teacher here. it's believed that the gunman killed his mother and the children in her classroom. police say they continue to investigate. they are processing the scene right now. they are also going to court to get search warrants to execute them in various locations, of course, trying to answer the big question whenever something like this happens why? why did this happen? investigators don't even venture a guess of how long they will be processing the scene, the school which was just a short ways from here. they say they are going through it meticulously to try and figure out exactly what happened minute by minute and try to figure out exactly why this happened.

want to express our thoughts and prayers that everyone affected by this terrible tragedy in newtown, connecticut. our words can do little to ease your pain. but you know this. we are with you in this incredible difficult time. and recognize that you are who we are thinking about, even as we try to focus on our work today. so as for the markets, it was another weak day. dow dipped 36 points. s&p gave up .41%. nasdaq declined .70. a lot of that again because of apple. you know the drill as we head into the weekend. i'm not expecting to hear any progress on the fiscal cliff. but you know, i always watch the sunday morning talk shows now very closely and i'm looking for some politicians saying something encouraging. what does encouraging mean? it means a republican uttering the two words tax increase without the word no before it. and the democrats uttering two words, spending cuts, without the word no before them. neither seems to be able to pull off that syntax, though. at this point i think we've got to assume that the washington people, they can't get it together. we've got to gird
elementary school. in the small town of newtown conn. that is in western connecticut in fairfield county. you can see in active seen as police are still there investigating. there are a lot of parents and students are around area this morning that been a scourge of the school. the school is all under lockdown even though this happen at one particular element school sandy hook. around 9:30 a.m. when it happened we know that the shooter is dead. there are unconfirmed reports of maybe one other death. it could be a child. we know there are three people in the hospital at least. all of these are unconfirmed reports. there are many conflicting reports as to the number killed. the emergency audio tape is what we have taken a listen. >> i with the paris here less the children there were in the classroom during the event. i am try to get an account on them now. there were not in the regular, we here, our rooms. i am gathering the names of the storms the one in the classroom at the time. >> there are so many conflicting reports coming in is hard to know anything except the one confirmation from ap is
